João Santiago

João Santiago (born 1995, in Portugal) is a performer, dancer, maker and teacher based in Munich and Porto. He has always admired and been fascinated by the behavior of the body and mind in all the different atmospheres and situations. Starting his dance studies in Portugal in the Conservatório de Música da Jobra, he successfully completed his dance education at ArtEZ Institute of the Arts (NL) with the bachelor dancer/maker in 2017. Around Europe, João has been dancing and performing his own work and collaborated with different companies and artists (dance, circus, street performance) such as Victor Hugo Pontes (Nome Próprio), Radar 360 Associação Cultural, Romulus Neagu, Noura Rezgui, Alondra Castellanos Arreola, Nicole Beutler and others. At the same time, he has been researching and initiating his own practice of movement based on the expansion and repetition of small physical and emotional impulses to the ends of the body and space. The unpredictability and vulnerability of the body as a reaction to a challenge is a big part of João’s work. He believes that the difficulties and the challenges make the person fight limits and the body itself creates a new vocabulary, almost as if it was the result of a survival instinct. João’s language and work is influenced by different artistic techniques such as classical ballet, modern, floor work, contact improvisation, acrobatics but also sports, physical theater and others related to the study of the movement.
